Privacy notice
Last updated 2 October 2026.
The short version
- You don't need an account, and we never ask for your name or email.
- The subjects, courses and jobs you pick, and your plan, are saved on your own phone or computer, not sent to us.
- If you let WayWhat use your location, it stays on your device. A postcode is only looked up to find a rough area.
- We count how many people use each screen, without cookies and without knowing who you are.
- No adverts follow you around, and nothing is sold to anyone.
Who we are
WayWhat is an independent, UK-based project that helps students and families explore routes after GCSEs and A-levels. For anything about privacy, email [email protected].
What we don't collect
WayWhat has no accounts, no sign-up and no messaging between users. We don't collect names, email addresses, dates of birth or school details, and we don't use cookies or advertising trackers.
What's stored on your device
To remember your choices between visits, WayWhat saves a small amount of information in your browser's own storage on your device: the subjects, courses, jobs and filters you've chosen; your plan and notes; your location, if you set one for distances; and settings such as whether you've dismissed the install message or turned off visit counting. This never leaves your device and isn't sent to us. You can remove it with the "Clear" buttons in the app, or by clearing this site's data in your browser settings. Because this storage is only used to provide the features you ask for, no cookie consent is needed.
Sharing your plan
If you tap Share my plan, WayWhat creates a link that contains your plan (your subjects, shortlist and notes) inside the link itself. Nothing is sent to or stored by WayWhat, but anyone you send the link to can see what's in it, so avoid putting personal details in your notes.
Location and postcodes
Distances are optional. If you choose Use my location, your device works out where you are and WayWhat uses it on your device only. If you type a postcode, it's sent once to postcodes.io, a free public UK postcode service, which returns a rough location. We don't receive or keep your postcode.
Usage statistics
We use GoatCounter to count visits, so we know which parts of WayWhat are useful. It records which screen or page was opened, the website that linked to it, the type of browser and screen, and the country. It doesn't use cookies, doesn't store IP addresses, and can't identify you. We never send what you choose, search for or type. You can turn counting off on any device in About.
Hosting and email
WayWhat is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes technical information such as IP addresses to deliver the site and protect it from attacks. If you email us, Cloudflare forwards your message to us; we use your email address and message only to reply, and delete them when they're no longer needed.
Links to other websites
WayWhat links to universities, colleges, official guidance, Amazon (for revision guides) and Ko-fi (for tips). When you follow a link, that website's own privacy policy applies. Amazon links include a WayWhat reference so Amazon knows the visit came from us; we don't receive any information about you or what you buy.
Young people
WayWhat is designed for people aged 13 and over, and their families. Everything is private by default, we don't build profiles of anyone, and we don't use techniques to keep you scrolling or nudge you into sharing more.
Our legal basis
Under UK data protection law, we rely on legitimate interests to run WayWhat, produce anonymous usage statistics, and reply to emails. We keep this to the minimum needed.
Your rights
You can ask what information we hold about you (if any), and ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing [email protected]. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
Changes
If we change how WayWhat handles information, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
